Shakespeare & Sons
Books & Bagels
In many bookstores, a sign greets you at the entrance with a stern warning - no food or drinks beyond this point.
At Shakespeare & Sons, the expectation to treat their carefully curated selection of mostly English-language books with care is no different.
But here, there’s a twist. The inhouse café, Fine Bagels, is an inseparable part of the experience.
Picture this - savoring sweet or salty handmade bagels, chocolate or plain rugelach, cookies and cakes, all while leisurely browsing through the shelves.
Every visit tempts you to take at least one treasure home, and honestly, who could resist?
„THE REAL THING
HAND-ROLLED
RISEN COLD
BOILED SWEET
BAKED HOT
TOASTED
SCHMEARED“
…that’s how Laurel Beth Kratochvila perfectly sums up her bagels.
Following a traditional New York recipe, these bagels are freshly baked daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., served with lox, cream cheese, pastrami, goat cheese, hummus, avocado, peanut butter or jam.
Since 2014, Fine Bagels has shared the historic bookstore on Warschauer Straße with Shakespeare & Sons. But the story began much earlier.
Roman Kratochvila first opened his business in 2002 in Prague, bringing over two decades of experience and passion for books to Berlin.
This love shines through in the exceptional selection, ranging from rare antiques and quirky biographies to art books, sci-fi and the most enchanting children’s literature.
The perfect pairing of books and bagels, combined with an incredibly relaxed atmosphere, makes this one of our absolute favorite spots in Berlin.
